Natural
Resource Appraisal and Consulting
As the nation's
oldest forestry consulting firm, Sewall provides comprehensive natural
resource appraisal and consulting services, including real estate
appraisal, investment analysis, resource modeling and analysis,
timber tax consulting, due diligence, arbitration, and expert testimony.
A recognized leader in resource valuation, Sewall assists domestic
and international clients with due diligence and resource analysis
worldwide. We also evaluate unique coastal properties, recreation
lands, and resource-related commercial properties, conservation
easements, and partial interests.
Sewall helps
clients find suitable investment opportunities, evaluate investments,
and track investment performance, allocate cost basis for accounting
purposes, make charitable contributions of real property, develop
estate or income tax plans, seek tax abatements, partition real
estate, and develop conservation easements. We provide regional
timber price indexing for select clients. We provide support in
eminent domain proceedings and expert testimony in litigation (including
timber trespass, timber taxation, and resource analysis). We also
provide management consulting services, cost studies, regulatory
risk analysis, and natural resource policy analysis. Drawing on
our wide experience, we offer public and private seminars in resource
appraisal, forest investment analysis, and growth and yield modeling.
We also publish The Timberland
Report, a periodic timberland newsletter on financial trends.
Historically,
our appraisal services have focused on the northeastern United States
and eastern Canada. In recent years, Sewall has become more active
in appraising forestlands in Appalachia, the Southeast, the Midwest,
and western United States and Canada. We offer forestland investment
analysis services internationally.
Sewall's appraisal
services are provided through our headquarters in Old Town, Maine,
and our southern office in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our staff
includes two MAIs supported by highly skilled appraisers, resource
economists, and biometricians. We have extensive experience throughout
the Northeast, Appalachia, the South, the Lake States, and the West,
and across Canada. Offshore valuation assignments have included
properties in New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina,
Chile, and Hawaii. We maintain a database with thousands of real
estate transactions, augmented by region-wide stumpage data. We
also provide forestland investment analysis services internationally.

Complementing
our appraisal work, we offer services in forest economics, timber
inventory, geographic information system (GIS) mapping and analysis,
growth and yield modeling, harvest scheduling, lender auditing services,
forest resource studies, and aerial photography. Sewall assists
potential forestland investors by providing this complete suite
of support services.
Investment
services include supply and demand analysis, forest products price
forecasting, forest modeling, financial analysis, highest and best
use analysis, assessment of nontimber opportunities, valuation,
and environmental auditing. Our extensive knowledge of the forest
industry, and of its changing economic, social, and regulatory environment,
provides the foundation for meeting our clients' needs..

Bret Vicary, Ph.D., MAI, CGA, LPF
Vice President
Bret Vicary has assisted clients with appraisals across the U.S.
and Canada, Australasia, and South America. A recognized authority
in appraisal, investment analysis, timber taxation, forest management
and policy, Mr. Vicary has published numerous articles and taught
intensive professional courses in forest appraisal and investment
analysis around the nation. He is a licensed forester in Maine,
New Hampshire, Alabama, and North and South Carolina; a Certified
General Appraiser in Maine, Pennsylvania, and Michigan; a member
of the Association of Consulting Foresters; and a Faculty Associate
at the University of Maine. He holds the Appraisal Institutes
MAI designation. At Sewall, he directs consulting services and litigation
support.
Ben
S. Moore, LPF, CGA
Forest
Resource Analyst/Appraiser
Ben
Moore joined Sewall in 1998, bringing 10 years' experience in the
administration of timberland sales and recreational leases. As a
project forester, he played a key role in the corporate divestiture
of timberland in the northeastern and southeastern United States.
A licensed forester, real estate broker, and certified appraiser
in Maine, North and South Carolina, he is involved in appraisal,
timber inventory, and management at Sewall. He represents Sewall
clients throughout the eastern United States.
Gerilyn
L. Bossé,
LPF, CGA
Forest
Resource Analyst/Appraiser
Gerilyn Bossé joined Sewall in 2002 as a Forest Resource
Analyst/Appraiser. To date, her project work has focused on providing
support to Sewall's forestry and natural resource analysts on appraisal
assignments. Ms Bossé brings to Sewall's forestry staff 15
years' experience at Fort James Corporation as a Project Forester,
Procurement Forester, and Operations Analyst. At Fort James, Ms
Bossé played a key role in the corporate divestiture of timberland
in the northeastern and southeastern United States. During her tenure,
she was responsible for real estate-related transactions and management
of the recreational and commercial lease program. As a Procurement
Forester, Ms Bossé was involved with sourcing two hardwood
chip plants and a studmill.
Bruce
Brockway, MS
Forest Resource Analyst/Appraiser
Bruce Brockway brings 29 years experience
in managing fiber supply operations and manufacturing for major
Maine market pulp and tissue business. During his career, he has
been responsible for three chip manufacturing plants, a chip truck
fleet, chip sales and purchasing, pulpwood procurement, transportation
contracts, and a staff of professional foresters, technicians, and
wood scalers. At Sewall, he participates in management audits, appraisal
research, and resource studies.
Dave
Stevens, MS
Forest Economist/Senior
Consultant
With 24 years forestry and mill management experience and
extensive training in total quality management (TQM), Dave Stevens
has supervised plant facilities of over 200 employees, managed large
wood manufacturing projects, and led organizational development
teams to improve business results. At Sewall, Mr. Stevens is responsible
for managing forestry consulting projects in the Southeast. He also
assists Sewall staff in developing and implementing strategies to
improve business systems company-wide.
Ernest
Bowling, MS, LPF
Biometrician
Ernest Bowling specializes in forest inventory, growth and yield,
and harvest scheduling at Sewall, bringing 21 years' industry experience.
He manages Sewall's forest inventory system and designs and supervises
forest inventory projects for small landowners, large industrial
landowners, and government organizations. He also develops growth
and yield models and formulates strategic harvest scheduling analyses
for clients using both Woodstock and Stanley models.
Jesse
Studley ,

Timberland Appraiser
Jesse Studley brings to Sewall's staff of timberland appraisers
expertise in forestry GIS, forest inventory, and surveying. HIs
experience includes harvest planning and layout, timber marking,
local and state permitting, and boundary research.

Ashley
Miller,
MS, RF
Timberland Appraiser
Ashley Miller has performed forest inventory analysis and forest
health monitoring on several projects in North Carolina and planned
and implemented research trials in Chile. Fluent in Spanish, she
provides forest appraisal support on Sewall projects in South America
and the southeastern U.S.
Scott
Brodbeck,
MS
Timberland Appraiser
Scott Brodbeck comes to Sewall with experience in appraising complex
southern properties and significant skills in southern forestry
consulting. He has appraised properties throughout the southern
U.S. and helped clients identify HBU sales and recommended appropriate
marketing strategies. In addition, he has provided consulting services
to landowners in the areas of forest management, wildlife habit
development and herbicide treatments.

Tim Mack, MS
Forest Biometrician/Resource
Analyst
Tim Mack performs forest inventory and modeling, resource studies,
appraisal, and due diligence consulting out of Sewall's new office
in International Falls. Mr.
Mack has 15 years' experience in the forest industy, working as
a forest planner for Boise Cascade in the Lake States and as an
inventory and analysis forester for MeadWestvaco in New England.
He also provided forestry consulting services to Boise, assisting
with land disposition efforts in the Lakes States and the West.
Most recently he has been involved in several large inventory and
due diligence projects for Sewall in Pennsylvania and Ontario.
